This evening’s program features the 2010 Best of Bernal and Spirit of Bernal award winning films and filmmakers as determined by the 2010 Submission/Selection Committee.
The Best of Bernal award recognizes the Bernal-based filmmaker who either lives or works
in the neighborhood and whose work is considered the best of this season. We have a tie
this year:
Jamie Meltzer for LA CAMINATA and Emiko Omori for AN AFRICAN JOURNEY
The Spirit of Bernal Award goes to a filmmaker who captures the spirit, the sentiment and sensibility of our neighborhood and this year, the award goes to:
Theo Rigby – SIN PAIS
The Evening’s Film Lineup
AFRICAN JOURNEY Emiko Omori TRT 15:00 Screening programs have successfully reduced cervical cancer mortality rates and the incidence of advanced disease in industialized countries, but in Uganda and all over sub-Saharan Africa, througout Latin America and Southeast Asia, women continue to die from this preventable disease. This piece produced for PINCC (Prevention International: No Cervical Cancer) recounts the efforts of those trying to change the outcomes for these women. |

LA CAMINATA Jamie Meltzer TRT 15:00 Seven hours south of the US/Mexican Border lies the small town of Alberto, where the local community, like many pueblos across Mexico, has lost 80 percent of its population to migration into the US. But Alberto has a plan to revive its community, the creation of a theme-park event: a simulated border corssing, complete with balaclava-clad “coyotes” as guides and “border patrol” that chase “migrants” over the terrain throughout the night. They call this event “La Caminata” — the journey, hike, trek. |

SIN PAIS (Without Country) Theo Rigby TRT 19:35 One family’s complex and emotional journey involving deportation. In 1992, Sam and Elida Mejia left Guatemala during a violent civil war and brought their one-year old son, Gilbert, to California. Two years ago, immigration agents stormed the Mejia’s house looking for someone who didn’t live there. Sam, Elida, and son Gilbert were all undocumented and became deeply entangled in the U.S. immigration system. With intimate access and striking imagery, Sin País explores the complexities of the Mejia’s new reality of a separated family—parents without their children, and children without their parents. |
