Event Details

UC Hastings Fashion, Art, and Design Law Society invites you to its first art law panel and CLE program “Illegal Instagram: Fair Use Issues of Photography of Art” on Thursday, January 23, 2014.

Join for a dynamic discussion on art, photography, and copyright law. Panelists will discuss issues that arise when photographs of artwork are taken and shared, particularly through the internet.

This event is free and open to the public. It will be held in the Alumni Reception Center on the second floor.

Moderated by:
Professor Ben Depoorter currently holds the Roger J. Traynor Research Chair at U.C. Hastings and is an Affiliate Scholar at the Stanford University Center for Internet & Society. His scholarly interests include the enforcement of copyright law, property law theory, technology and intellectual property law, with an emphasis on behavioral research.  His writings have been widely published and presented.

Panelists:

  • Susan Kelk Cervantes, a 40-year veteran of the San Francisco community mural art movement, is the founder and director of the Precita Eyes Muralists in the Mission District of San Francisco.
  • Karen S. Frank is a Partner at Coblentz Patch Duffy & Bass LLP.  Her practice covers virtually every aspect of intellectual property, including copyright, trademark, domain names, unfair competition, right of publicity, branding and advertising, publishing and the Internet.
  • Linda Joy Kattwinkel is a visual artist as well as an attorney. She practices primarily copyright, trademark, and arts law. Ms. Kattwinkel received her law degree cum laude from Hastings College of the Law in 1991.
  • Elizabeth M. Williams is a photographer whose work captures the layers of visual communication that fill urban environments, finding moments when our highly designed world coalesces into a new image.  At times, she incorporates others’ artwork into her own, re-contextualizing that work in the process.
