“Frameline Encore”: Free Edgy Queer Film Series | Bay Area

Enjoy edgy free queer film year-round with the Frameline Encore Screening Series in San Francisco and Oakland.

Frameline Encore aims to increase accessibility to diverse queer stories, with an emphasis on films and discussions about underrepresented experiences, such as gender variant folks and queer communities of color.

Please note, the screening will take place at either The Roxie or The Landmark Theatres Piedmont.

Frameline Encore presents a free screening of Anita’s Last Cha-Cha.

In a small town in the Philippines, 12-year-old Anita, a smart-mouthed tomboy, becomes infatuated with Pilar, a beautiful and intriguing adult woman. Ever the little butch-in-training, Anita sports her crush around town, as an oblivious Pilar tries to outrun her painful past. Once Anita discovers Pilar’s connection with Anita’s cousin Oscar and the details of Pilar’s past, the young girl’s first crush is replaced by her very first broken heart.

Set against the backdrop of a yearly fertility festival full of colorful local characters, Filipino tradition, and gender role expectations, this tender coming-of-age story treats life’s hardships with an innocent and light hand.
