Thanks to KPIX for letting us know that a recent survey by the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce determined that more than half of all storefronts in San Francisco are not currently open for business due to COVID-19.

The study of approximately 2,500 storefronts showed that about 1,200 were open (46%) and about 1,300 have either yet to reopen, or are closed for good (54%).

There are many reasons for why storefronts might not be open, ranging from those who have gone completely out of business, to those who are not yet allowed to open (such as bars, indoor fitness studios) and those retail business who have decided that there isn’t enough customer-base yet to make it worthwhile to reopen.

The report also states that the city’s unemployment claim numbers have reached 193,000, four times the number of claimed filed during the financial crisis of 2008.
