BART Tests Ads on Its New Fare Gates

9 stations are getting ad wraps in a new revenue pilot

BART is turning its fare gates into advertising space with a new pilot program at nine stations across the system. The wraps cover the agency’s newer fare gates and are being tested as BART explores new revenue opportunities ahead of a projected structural deficit beginning in Fiscal Year 2027.

The pilot is rolling out at stations including 19th Street Oakland, Downtown Berkeley, Dublin/Pleasanton, Concord, Fremont, 16th Street Mission, and Daly City. Additional fare gate wraps are expected at San Francisco International Airport and Oakland Airport stations ahead of the FIFA World Cup beginning June 13, 2026.

BART says the wraps were tested to ensure they don’t damage the gates and still allow clear sightlines for police and staff. The agency could expand the program if the pilot proves successful.

The advertising test comes after BART completed installation of new fare gates at all 50 stations in 2025. The agency says the gates have helped reduce fare evasion and generate about $10 million in additional annual revenue.
