California Set to Get First New State Park in 13 Years

Just 90 minutes from SF, the 2,500-acre Dos Rios Reserve will likely become California’s 280th state park

California is hoping to get a new state park. The site, now known as the Dos Rios Reserve, is a 2,500-acre property just a 20-minute drive from Modesto, and may be open to the public by next year if Gov. Gavin Newsom’s budget is approved.

The non-profit River Partners, which spent 10 years restoring the property, will likely donate Dos Rios Ranch Preserve to the California State Park system and if approved, is expected to open in 2023 to become California’s 280th state park. Thanks to River Partners, the land has become a thriving home to endangered wildlife such as the riparian brush rabbit, Aleutian cackling goose, Central Valley Chinook salmon, and the sandhill crane. Monarch butterflies have also returned.

The full development of the state park is likely to take up to 10 years, starting first with trails, restrooms and picnic tables followed by campgrounds.

River Partners hopes the preserve exemplifies what the state can do today to prepare for flooding tomorrow while providing ecosystem services, including improved water quality, groundwater recharge, wildlife habitat, and carbon sequestration.
