Free Muni on NYE ’til 5am

If you choose to get hammered on New Year’s Eve, rest assured you can get home safely for free via bus, train or light rail if you live anywhere other than the North Bay. Within San Francisco, get free rides on Muni all night starting at 8 pm on December 31, 2019.

SF Muni

Confirmed for 12/31/19
Free rides on all Muni lines and routes from 8 pm on New Year’s Eve until 5 am on New Year’s Day.

>>IMPORTANT: Please do not tag your Clipper card during the complimentary service.

  • Complimentary Muni service from 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 31 to 5 a.m. on Wednesday, January 1. Please do not activate a MuniMobile ticket. Metro fare gates will be open.
  • Extra Muni Metro service:
    – Between West Portal Station and 4th & King from 9 p.m. until 2:15 a.m.
    – Between West Portal and Embarcadero stations from 2:15 to 5 a.m.
  • Extra Owl service from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.:
  • Bus Substitutions
    – Service on the F Market & Wharves historic streetcar line is provided by buses all day
    > Historic streetcar service is available on the E Embarcadero.
    – Service on the Cable Cars is provided by buses after approximately 6 p.m.

AC Transit

AC Transit is ringing in the New Year by offering free rides on all lines beginning at 8 p.m. on Tuesday night, December 31, 2019 until 5 a.m. on Wednesday morning, January 1, 2020. On Wednesday, January 1, 2020, all AC Transit local and Transbay lines will operate on Sunday schedules and all AC Transit offices will be closed.

Free Downtown Oakland Broadway Shuttle

Downtown Oakland’s Free B Shuttle runs on New Year’s Eve every 12 minutes from 7 pm to 10 pm, perfect for pre-gaming; hop on and hop off at any stop between Embarcadero West (Jack London Square) and 27th Street.

SamTrans will run its regular non-school day service on New Year’s Eve

SamTrans will offer free rides beginning at 8 p.m. on December 31 until 5 a.m. on January 1. For more details, please visit www.samtrans.com.

Caltrain will run four post-midnight trains, departing San Francisco at 12:45 a.m., 1:15 a.m., 1:45 a.m. and 2:15 a.m., or when full.

  • Caltrain service will be free after 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and continue until 5 a.m. For more details, please visit www.caltrain.com.

During the last four days of 2019, including New Year’s Eve, you’ll ride VTA free, throughout Santa Clara County, from December 28 – 31. No ticket, no downloading and no tagging required.

On New Year’s Eve only, the 181 bus line and light rail lines will run extended service approximately an hour later than usual. See more details here.

No special fares for New Year’s Eve, but there will be extended service until 3 am. Trains will run every 20 minutes after midnight with extra trains standing by in downtown San Francisco after the fireworks show. View BART NYE ScheduleThe best tip we can give is to buy your round trip ticket in advance to avoid a line on the way home.

  • BART will provide additional service until approximately 3 a.m. on January 1
    • After 8 p.m., BART service to and from the East Bay will be split between Embarcadero and Montgomery stations.
      • Pittsburg/Bay Point and Richmond line trains will not stop at Embarcadero Station.
      • Dublin/Pleasanton and Fremont line trains will not stop at Montgomery Street Station.
      • Dublin/Pleasanton and Fremont trains will not stop at West Oakland. The first East Bay stop is Lake Merritt Station.
      • Millbrae and Daly City passengers should use Montgomery Street Station.

Golden Gate Transit BusConfirmed for 12/31/19  – offers no special fares for New Year’s Eve and will run a normal Sunday schedule.

Golden Gate FerryConfirmed for 12/31/19  – will operate on a normal Sunday schedule on New Year’s Eve and will be closed on New Year’s Day.
