A giant sea lion nicknamed “Chonkers” is quickly becoming San Francisco’s latest waterfront sea-lebrity.

The massive animal, a Steller sea lion, which is much larger than the more common California sea lions, has been spotted lounging among the docks at Pier 39, drawing crowds of curious visitors and camera phones.

Experts say Steller sea lions can weigh over 2,000 pounds, making them significantly bigger than the typical sea lions that regularly gather at the popular tourist spot.

Officials say the giant visitor is one of two Steller sea lions currently seen in the Bay. While sightings of the species do happen occasionally, they’re rare enough to generate plenty of buzz when one shows up, especially one this big.

For now, “Chonkers” appears to be settling in comfortably, giving locals and visitors a chance to catch a glimpse of the supersized sea lion in person. Chonkers likes to hang out at Pier 39 in the mornings, so come early if you want a chance to spot the supersized sea lion.
