Presumably to reduce crowds of people trying to celebrate and take photos in the park, SF Rec and Park announced that all light installations in Golden Gate Park will go dark on New Year’s Eve.

As we prepare to say goodbye to 2020, we reflect on the coronavirus pandemic and the thousands of people who have lost their lives to the virus. Millions of healthcare workers are fighting each day to keep Americans alive and will continue to do so in 2021. To honor our healthcare heroes, as well as those lost in the past year, we will be turning off all of the holiday light exhibits in Golden Gate Park on New Year’s Eve.

Although the parks department hasn’t been specific, we’re assuming this means the Entwined lighted forest, the observation wheel, “Revival” at the bandshell and “Night Bloom” at the Conservatory of Flowers.

Be sure to do your part by celebrating this New Year’s Eve safely. Don’t gather with other households. Wear a mask on essential outings. Keep physical distance. Wash hands often.

In addition to turning off the Golden Gate Park holiday light installations, we will be closing the following park features for New Year’s Eve:

  • Ocean Beach parking lot (closes at 5 a.m. on December 31)
  • Marina Green parking lots (closes at 6 p.m. on December 31)
  • Stern Grove parking lot (closes at 6 p.m. on December 31)

The gate to Twin Peaks off of Portola Drive will remain closed to vehicle traffic for the evening of December 31 as well.

These park features will reopen and resume normal operations on January 1, 2021 beginning at 5 a.m. while the Twin Peaks Portola gate will resume opening to vehicle traffic in the evenings at 6 p.m.
