Meet The Presidio’s Three Adorable Coyote Puppies

A litter of three adventurous pups is beginning to move around the park. What to do if you encounter one.

It’s now more than two months into the 2020 pupping season, which typically runs from spring to fall. We’ve confirmed that a litter of at least three pups was born in mid-April. These pups are reaching eight weeks of age and beginning traveling with the adults around the park.

To protect their pups, adult coyotes may exhibit defensive behavior toward dogs. They do this in an attempt to keep other canines away from their young (which may be nearby, but out of sight). A coyote may follow for a short distance in order to ensure that a dog is a sufficient distance away, and then will return to their pups.

View The Presidio’s Coyote Webpage.

Note that dogs must be on leash at all times in the park. If you encounter a coyote with your dog, the best course of action is to quickly leave the area. If the coyote follows, be assertive and aggressive (e.g. forcefully throw objects to scare, not harm) while continuing to walk quickly away. Do not run.

A section of Park Trail and a section of the Bay Area Ridge Trail remain closed to dogs through the end of the pupping season (see map). Dog walkers should stay aware of their surroundings and carefully read posted signage. Watch for areas of trails temporarily closed to dogs.

The park will continue to monitor coyotes in the Presidio and post updates on the website. Should you have questions or wish to report an incident of concern, contact the Wildlife Hotline at (415) 561-4148 or coyote@presidiotrust.gov. They’ll respond to all incident reports.
