San Francisco police have announced they will stop the long-standing practice of releasing most mug shots of people who have been arrested, unless they pose a threat to public safety.

Currently, booking photos are typically made public whether or not the person is actually prosecuted for the crime which, experts say, can undermine the presumption of innocence and perpetuate stereotypes.

In San Francisco, the exceptions would be if a crime suspect poses a threat or if officers need help locating a suspect or person who is at-risk.

Also, mug shots released to the public can take on a life of their own as numerous websites publish mug shots (regardless if the person was charged or convicted) and then charge a fee if you want your photo removed, which California’s attorney general likened to extortion.
