SF’s Toy Boat Dessert Cafe Reopens as “Toy Boat by Jane”

The same quirky, nostalgia remains — now with homemade baked goods too

Thank you SF Chronicle for letting us know that SF’s nostalgic Toy Boat Dessert Cafe has reopened with baked goods from Jane the Bakery.

Amanda Michael, the owner of Jane the Bakery, reopened the SF’s Toy Boat Dessert Cafe as Toy Boat by Jane on Saturday, September 17.

Toy Boat has been a San Francisco institution. Known for the eclectic collection of vintage and unique toys, welcoming hospitality and epic ice cream sundaes, it was beloved for almost 40 years. During the Covid shutdown owner Jesse Fink decided it was time to retire and passed the business on to Amanda Michael, owner and founder of Jane.

Amanda is a native San Franciscan and long time customer of Toy Boat. She started visiting Toy Boat as a high schooler and continued on throughout her adulthood. Her kids were raised going to Toy Boat for special occasions (and just because they all loved it). The opportunity to step into the history of this iconic shop was impossible to resist!

Amanda looks forward to bringing Jane’s food and drink into the Toy Boat space – combining her salads, sandwiches and baked goods with one of her favorite treats ever – Ice Cream! You’ll see still see Double Rainbow ice cream on the menu and now all the sauces and toppings will be homemade.

Plus, the iconic toys and famous kitschy mechanical horse aren’t going anywhere. Kids can still ride the horse for just 50 cents, with sanitization between rides.
