Community Conversation: Preparing for Sea Level Rise in Marin County | Mill Valley

This summer, the County of Marin partnered with Climate Access and FEMA Region IX to install the Here Now Us virtual reality sea level rise viewfinders in Mill Valley. On October 8th, 2015, Climate Access, Supervisor Kate Sears and the project team will host a facilitated conversation with residents and community leaders to discuss planning for a more resilient Marin.
More than 3,700 visits were recorded during the four-month pilot project, which included a survey. From the feedback received so far, it is clear that Marin County residents care about climate change, are concerned about flooding, and are interested and engaged in the future of their community.
Everyone is talking about climate change, but we also must start doing. This community conversation is an opportunity to begin the broad discussion of how to plan for the inevitable changes to our shoreline. What do we already know? What is already being done? And how can we imagine our community’s future so that we can start now to anticipate what living with more water can be like.

The solutions to flooding from climate change can only be found together. We have been involving the public on sea level rise education, including last year’s “Living With Water” workshop in southern Marin and C-SMART in west Marin, among others, and we know that parts of Marin already experience flooding on sunny days with no storms on the horizon. There is little doubt that our communities will be among the first to feel the effects of rising seas.

Come take the next step in planning for climate risks on October 8th 2015. Please join your neighbors, community leaders, local businesses, and elected officials in a community conversation. Facilitated by Climate Access and Dr. Susanne Moser, we will discuss what is most vulnerable to sea level rise in Marin County, what we value in our communities, and explore the pathways of action we can take together.
