Head south on the Nimitz trail toward Tilden Park and, after about 1.8 miles, hop onto the Conlon Trail. The walk on the Conlon (1.9 miles) is along a fire road with some panoramic outlooks both toward San Francisco and to Marin and the North Bay.

Here’s a great free weekend hike idea from SFGATE’s David Curran.
As you begin your hike on Rifle Range Road Trail in Wildcat Canyon (only about 10 minutes from downtown Berkeley) you see that the trail starts down a dirt road, then it takes a right turn and appears to vanish.
But as you get closer, you see that the trail didn’t fall off the end of the earth, it’s just a bit steep — steep enough to keep many people from ever coming back.
It’s built-in crowd control at its best.
For extensive details about the hike including photos, detailed trail notes, and hiking tips, check out the article An East Bay hike that’s never crowded. But there is a catch from SFGATE
Either way you go, the final stretch up the hill awaits. Whenever I get to this point, I pause, take a long exhale and slip into a very low gear.
And soon you’ll have spectacular views both west to San Francisco Bay and east toward El Sobrante, San Pablo Reservoir and Mount Diablo.
Getting There:
