Friday Nights at the de Young the museum stays open late and hosts all sorts of interesting events, concerts, art projects and lectures. Although regular admission prices still apply to visit the museum’s galleries, all of the events below are in the public spaces of the museum are completely free and open to the public
Live music by ASWAT, to complement the exhibit Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs. Under the direction of Rachid Halihal, who brings with him the classical Egyptian repertoire, the concert will showcase the Egyptian influences of North African music. zawaya.org
Hands-on art making for everyone, with “art diva” Kim Erickson. Make a canopic jar like the ones used by the ancient Egyptians.
Special Lecture: “Why We Care about King Tut: Gold, Death, and Race,” by Egyptologist Kara Cooney.
Introduction by Dr. Renee Dreyfus, curator of Ancient Art and Interpretation, FAMSF. Kara Cooney is Assistant Professor of Egyptian Art and Architecture at UCLA and co-curated the Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs exhibit at its Los Angeles County Museum of Art presentation in 2005. www.karacooney.com
