The San Francisco History Association hosts monthly talks which explore our city’s enchanting history in depth.
Each month, a local history expert hosts a themed talk usually accompanied by a slide show with light refreshments.
Who was Erdnase, the enigmatic author of card magic’s greatest book — and was he a serial killer? Who was responsible for the Preparedness Day Bombing in 1916, the worst act of terrorism in San Francisco history? And what do we know today about the Zodiac Killer, who may be the most infamous murderer of modern times? These are San Francisco’s most puzzling cases, ones that may never be solved, and that are subject to continuing speculation and controversy to this day.
Paul Drexler has been writing about San Francisco crime since 1984. He worked for years with the late Kevin Mullen, retired Deputy Chief of the SFPD. Paul designed and co-produced SFPD Homicide, the interactive award-winning true crime game that has been used to teach police procedures. His Examiner column, “Notorious Crooks,” won him the 2017 Oscar Lewis Award from the San Francisco History Association. He also directs Crooks Tours of San Francisco, which offers walking crime tours of Chinatown and the Barbary Coast. He is the author of the upcoming book Notorious San Francisco: True Tales of Crime, Passion, and Murder.
