GEORGIA HODGES’ ARTIST STATEMENT ABOUT THIS PROJECT:

Science tells us that we are now past the point of actually solving the climate crisis and averting major climate disasters. We are now in adaptation mode. It is not a time for a relinquishment or surrender. There is no time for apathy or ignorance.

Adaptation mode requires bold and radical change. Our nostalgia for the past can be remedied with an active voice for change to the future. We can speak up with a genuine willingness for inclusivity. We gain a greater sense of purpose when we reach out and get to know our neighbors.

This mural, and this film, are where the arts and activism intersect, providing an access point to feel with one’s heart and respond to the call to support policy changes that put people and the planet first. Both the mural and film are here to inspire us to get behind bold change that will maintain something of great consequence for our future existence, for our children.

The Green New Deal is a framework from which to govern. It’s a framework from which to create smart, complex policy solutions that prioritize equity in all sectors and protect and restore the planet.

Though the Green New Deal is highly politicized, read it here: https://www.congress.gov/116/bills/hres109/BILLS-116hres109ih.pdf, both sides of the aisle can aspire to and work with this framework. It is comprehensive, holistic, and inclusive. It acknowledges that with creative, transparent, and inclusive effort, there is room for everyone at the table. It is neutral. It is modern. It is a way for our government to play a role in effectively protecting humanity, for our country to serve as a leader to other nations, and to provide the best possible means for adaptation to this new world.

Coexistence is in order. Certain behaviors, specifically our use of fossil fuels and our perpetuating of white superiority, must end. It is in the changing of these behaviors where the true adaptation will take place. It is radical, bold, and necessary change. Coexistence with all living things equals continued existence.
