Peace & Conflict Studies at UC Berkeley hosts the prominent Afghan parliamentarian, Malalai Joya. Often called “the bravest woman in Afghanistan,” Joya has taken a valiant stance in defense of women’s rights & the prevalance of warlords in the politics of her country. After her election to the Afghan Parliament in 2005, she was banned for calling it an asylum for “warlords and theocrats” and has since received numerous death threats & survived several assassination attempts. Nevertheless, she remains deeply committed to speaking out against human rights violations & corruption within Afghanistan today.
She will be signing her autobiography, entitled A Woman Among Warlords: The Extraordinary Story of an Afghan Who Dared to Raise Her Voice, following the lecture.
