Championing love and LGBT Pride Month, Tilden Hotel welcomes local artist Eric Dyer in its upcoming two-month artist showcase on the ground floor of the hotel. Free to enjoy by the public and hotel guests, the Tilden Hotel rotating art series shines a light on San Francisco’s spirited creativity and engaging community while directly supporting local artists. Dyer’s oil on canvas paintings, inspired by walks around San Francisco and personal experiences, will be on display through July.

Open to all, the night features complimentary elevated bar bites and beverages crafted by The Douglas Room, the hotel’s signature restaurant and bar.

Dyer is a San Francisco-based, non-binary trans artist who studied Studio Art at California College of the Arts (MFA) and Painting and Drawing at the University of North Texas (BFA). Their work has been featured at the Totally Rad Gallery in Berkeley, Fleet Wood in San Francisco, and the Maniac Gallery in Oakland. Guests interested in obtaining one or more of Dyer’s featured works in the art series are welcome to purchase a piece right from the lobby walls.

To kick off the two-month residency, Tilden Hotel will host a casual welcome reception on Tuesday, June 4 from 5-8 p.m. in the lobby to honor Dyer in what is known as Tilden Tuesday. The event is a bi-monthly gathering that takes place on the first Tuesday of every other month. Open to all, the night features complimentary elevated bar bites and beverages crafted by The Douglas Room, the hotel’s signature restaurant and bar.

“Our next artist showcase is a deep celebration of Pride in San Francisco and the LGBTQ community,” said Jason Webb, general manager of the Tilden Hotel. “The importance of our local community and togetherness are values we support year-round, and it’s especially exciting to spotlight Eric’s creativity during one of the city’s largest community celebrations of the year.”

The Tilden Hotel Art Program is supported through the local community and various local organizations including Wildflowers Institute, Hospitality House, the De Marillac Academy and more. With an emphasis on all things local, Tilden Hotel purchases an art piece from each spotlighted artist that is added to the hotel’s growing private collection of local works. 100 percent of proceeds of all art purchased at Tilden Tuesday will go directly to the artists.

New this June, Tilden Hotel joins SF First Thursday Art Walk, a community-led monthly event hosted by various gallery owners and artist studios in the Lower Polk and Tenderloin neighborhoods in San Francisco. The Art Walk is every first Thursday of the month from 6-10 p.m.

Tilden Hotel Art Program is supported through the local community, the Tilden Art Committee and its partner Hospitality House, whose community program funds studios for local artists with socioeconomic struggles. Each year, more than 3,500 artists access the program. 100 percent of proceeds of art purchased at Tilden Tuesday will go directly to the artists.

Artist Statement:

At first glance, my paintings look like they may be ink drawings, but I go through the process of mixing my own black oil paint from alizarian crimson, prussian blue, and burnt umber, to produce a deep and layered black. Once a mark is made, there is no going back.

Streets—the reality of the city where everything happens and is overlooked. A place where people will see only as far as their eyes let them. I grew up in Texas, a land dominated by roads and cars, where it is easy to be alone. Now I live in San Francisco, a city of sidewalks. Walking is how I get around. Walking gives us a chance to slow down, for our thoughts to catch up with us. It’s also a way to connect us to the neighborhoods where we live—it’s easier to meet people, to stop and look around. Everything starts from the ground up.

Every mistake lives in the painting.

Houses—the story of the city. Buildings shouting their history from rooftops only to be forgotten by the ground below. An accumulation of people’s ideas. Protection from the outside world. A space where we hide our thoughts and desires, but also where we share those same things with people we love.

In life, scenes exist as a memory—a meditation of the past and what’s to come. It requires me to slow down while painting, like slowing down to look at the city.

The sky above. A moment of hope, a passing beauty, a memory flickering as thousands of years go by. The flowers float in the air, suspended in a sunbeam. Clouds dance in the afternoon sky. The stars and sky connects us all. It is where our dreams reside.
