President John F. Kennedy proclaimed the ringing of the bells nationwide on Independence Day, July 4, 1963, with the words, “Let’s ring freedom bells.”

On the steps of the museum, hear the story of JFKs Bell-ringing Proclamation, the Putnam Family, the Korbel Bell and how it became an artifact of the Museum.

The Petaluma Museum commemorates this annual tradition with music, history, and the ringing of the historic Korbel Bell. Following the ceremony, enjoy refreshments and community under the beautiful oak tree in the museum’s courtyard.
