Both from Jewish families, Goodman and Shaw were contemporaries whose big bands dominated the 1930s and 1940s. Their chosen instrument was a clarinet, and their different styles kept them in competition for record sales and airplay. Their many classic numbers score the soundtrack to the Swing era.
