SF History Night | Pacific Heights
The San Francisco History Association hosts monthly talks which explore our city’s enchanting history in depth.
Each month, a local history expert hosts a themed talk usually accompanied by a slide show with light refreshments.
During the late 19th century and even into the 20th, San Franciscans regularly visited their deceased relatives and friends, particularly on a Sunday afternoon. Most of them traveled there for a nickel by way of several cable car lines.
Don Holmgren and Mike Phipps, directors of the San Francisco Cable Car Museum, will use vintage photographs and maps to illustrate an historical account of this time in gaslit San Francisco, before the 1906 quake and fire destroyed cable car lines and modernization forced the cemeteries to give way to housing and commercial development.
Holmgren and Phipps are authors of Watermusic in the Track, a history of San Francisco’s cable cars.
