SF’s Police Banned from Marching in 2021 Pride Parade

Following incident with protesters in 2021, Pride bans uniformed police from participating in parade.

San Francisco Pride’s Board Directors on Wednesday voted to ban uniformed police officers from participating in the 2021 Pride parade.

The board said they wanted to give the police grievance process time to hold officers accountable for the “wholly unnecessary escalation into violence.”

“After a year-long process, it appears there will be no consequences for either the department or the officers involved” – San Francisco Pride’s Board Directors

This decision came following an incident between police and protesters at the 2019 parade where police were seen pushing and dragging protesters across the ground.

“As the Chief of Police, I am disappointed in the Pride Board’s decision to exclude uniformed SFPD Officers from participating in the 2021 Pride Parade. I believe it is important for our members to participate in Pride Month activities so we can show firsthand that we are a diverse department, that we are proud of who we are and that we are willing to work closely with the LGBTQ community we serve.” – SFPD Chief William Scott

While uniformed police members of the San Francisco Police Department’s Pride Alliance contingent won’t be allowed to participate in the actual parade, they will continue to work the event as security.
