I’m super excited to share that Mutiny: Asians Storm British Music will be finally showing at this year’s 3rd-i SF Int’l South Asian Film Festival at the historic CastroTheater in SF on Sat 9/24 at 5pm followed by Q&A with director Vivek Bald (Cali native and UC Santa Cruz alum) & Bay area artists & activists.

You may remember Mutiny club nights in NY and Dhamaal (Asian Underground) club nights at Club Six for those of you who were here in the Bay Area in the late 90’s and early 00’s and the international buzz around this musical movement with Talvin Singh winning the Mercury Prize. This is a rare glimpse into this musical and cultural phenomena and we’ll also be hosting an afterparty playing selections from this era as well as the latest sounds of the Asian Underground at the newly re-opening Bissap Baobab starting at 9pm.

In a thrilling mix of live performances, candid interviews and rare archival footage, Mutiny provides an absorbing account of the contribution of South Asian artists to British popular music in the 1990s while charting the decades of cultural cross-pollination and political struggle that led up to that historic moment. Over the course of seven years Vivek Bald shot Mutiny with virtually no budget in a style that mirrored the DIY ethos of the film’s subjects. Featuring artists such as Asian Dub Foundation, Talvin Singh, Fun^Da^Mental, and State of Bengal, remains as a unique time-capsule of the music and activism of the British Asian second generation.

As a teenager in 1980s Harlem, Alaudin Ullah was swept up in the revolutionary energy of early hip-hop. He rejected his working-class Bangladeshi parents and turned his back on everything South Asian and Muslim until he became an adult. In Search of Bengali Harlem follows Ullah, from the streets of New York City to the villages of Bangladesh to uncover the pasts of his father, Habib, and mother, Mohima. We learn that Habib was part of an extraordinary history of mid-20th century Harlem, in which Bengali men, dodging racist Asian Exclusion laws, married into New York’s African American and Puerto Rican communities. We also discover, alongside Alaudin, the struggles that defined Mohima’s childhood in her home village, and her strength and courage as one of the first women to immigrate to the United States from rural Bangladesh. In Search of Bengali Harlem is a transformative journey for Alaudin Ullah, and for our understanding of the complex histories of South Asian Americans.
