SF’s Half-Marathon Returns to the Golden Gate Bridge for 2023
After six years, the most iconic bridge in the world will once again host half-marathon runners from across the world. The San Francisco Marathon officially announced the 2023 first half-marathon race will return to the Golden Gate Bridge after a six-year hiatus. The iconic bay bridge will now be featured as a key part of the route for the first half marathon happening Sunday, July 23, 2023.
“We are excited to have the Golden Gate Bridge back as a part of this race, and we’re so thankful to all of the agencies that helped make this happen and the collaborative effort to get our runners back on the bridge,” said Lauri Abrahamsen, Director of Operations at Jumping Fences, Inc. “There is something special about running across this beautiful and historic bridge– it elevates the experience and leaves a lasting memory for each runner.”
Beginning at Crissy Field Sports Basement at 6:30am, this year will be the last year runners can directly register to run the first half marathon. Next year, in 2024, a lottery system will be implemented, with the 2023 second half marathoners getting priority and loyal runners who’ve participated in three or more years.
“We’re starting the race in Crissy Field, where the best vistas of the Bay, sweeping downhills and neighborhood views will inspire the runners until they finish in Golden Gate Park,” said Abrahamsen.

Start your race at Crissy Field with the Golden Gate Bridge just a stone’s throw away, so close you could almost touch it. Climb up the footpath and run across this stunning bridge while you enjoy sweeping views of the Bay, then head toward Sausalito and Cavallo Point. The best selfie opportunities await you here! When you’ve captured the best shot, head under the bridge and up to its west side and make your way back to San Francisco. Expect sweeping downhills, neighborhood views, and a grand finale in Golden Gate Park! How can you say no to this?
