Every evening at sunset, over 220 state-of-the-art LED lighting fixtures illuminate City Hall’s exterior. Normally, a soft white glow shows off the play of light and shadow on the full façade and dome. Frequently, special plaza façade lighting schemes honor or celebrate events, seasons, and holidays.

In honor of Grateful Dead’s 60th Anniversary, San Francisco is lighting up in psychedelic colors including a tie-dye pattern on its iconic dome.

  • Saturday, August 2, 2025 – deep purple/blue – in recognition of Dead & Co celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Grateful Dead Concert in Golden Gate Park
  • Sunday, August 3, 2025 – City Hall façade deep purple/blue; projection of “tie-dye” color pattern on Dome – in recognition of Dead & Co celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Grateful Dead Concert in Golden Gate Park

The schedule is always tentative for the holiday lights and subject to change when there are special events and the building is lit in honor of those.
