Lucas Artists Program: Open Access Series
Mark de Clive-Lowe: Past Present (Tone Poems Across Time)
Composer, musician, and Lucas Artists Program Fellow, Mark de Clive-Lowe presents a special solo performance and artist talk exploring his latest project, Past Present (Tone Poems Across Time) – an ambient, synth-jazz meditation on memory, place, and posthumous healing. Inspired by his late father’s travels throughout Japan in the 1950s and 60s, the project traces a deeply personal journey of reconnection and reflection across time and generations.
Past Present is more than an album—it’s a sonic pilgrimage, a meditation on memory, grief, healing, and the kind of love we sometimes only come to understand in hindsight. Created before the journey even began, the music somehow already knew where it needed to go. Synths, harmony, and field recordings from across Japan—each piece a tone poem, each sound a step closer to catharsis, acceptance, and embrace.
For this intimate performance, de Clive-Lowe reimagines the album live using processed acoustic piano, electronics, and original field recordings. Visual artist Travis Flournoy joins on VJ duties, weaving archival images, personal imagery, and abstract projections into a richly textured experience.
