Edge on the Square presents SUPER FLEX: Powered by Alter Egos and Shadow Selves, San Francisco’s highly anticipated Annual Contemporary Art Festival. For this 4th festival iteration, SUPER FLEX takes over four streets in Chinatown—Grant Avenue, Waverly Place, Ross Alley, and Wentworth Place—to address the current erasure and division in America and to inspire the concept of the alter egos and shadow selves in all of us.
We are watching, in real time, as immigrants and minority communities, including LGBTQIA+ people, face escalating threats that aim to silence, criminalize, and eradicate. In response, at the intersection of solidarity and contemporary art, Edge invites festival collaborators and audiences to experiment with how alternate identities, shadows and disguises may function as forms of power, resistance and freedom.
The “alter egos” represented in this year’s festival become devices for play, for camouflage, and for flexing. Shadow selves may be considered as collaborators, helpers, and accomplices in resistance. We are each invited to revel in this exploration, to activate our own capacities for daring, improvisation, and liberation—honoring the joy and power found in the act of invention and reinvention. We are not defined by our shadows, we are in collaboration with and empowered by them.
The one-day event spotlights Asian-American and BIPOC artists and their multimedia art activations, installations, and performances throughout the neighborhood. Alongside cultural partners, arts organizations, local restaurants and vendors, and community residents, Edge is ready to “flex” by transforming vulnerability into power and imagination into collective action. Using art as a vehicle for positive change and community empowerment SUPER FLEX is a call to action for solidarity as we join forces against entities that seek to silence and divide. The festival’s celebration, creativity, and joyful gathering become a form of brilliant protest, one that reclaims voice, space, and possibility.
