The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a massive plastic “island” twice the size of Texas. It’s packed with “ghost gear”—lost fishing nets that drift for decades, killing marine life. While the problem is huge, the Ocean Voyages Institute has already proven we can haul out millions of pounds of trash.
But here’s why you should actually care: This isn’t just about ugly trash. Old fishing nets and plastic debris are killing sea turtles, whales, and fish every single day. And get this—over 50% of the oxygen you’re breathing right now comes from the ocean. When we trash the ocean, we’re literally messing with our own air supply.
