​Join us for the return of the Black Film as Protest screening series! We’re launching a new season focused on radical filmmakers from the global diaspora, starting with a special evening featuring Lu Stinnette.

​Currency tells the story of a 19-year-old as she navigates a housing crisis and tries to avoid returning to one of the only modes of survival she has ever known.

About Filmmaker
Lucretia “Lu” Stinnette tells character-driven stories about women navigating complex social realities. Her award-winning short films QuyenRedondo, and Currency have screened internationally and are recognized for their nuanced explorations of race, class, and identity.

​An alum of the AFI Directing Workshop for Women and a recipient of support from the San Francisco Film Society/Rainin Foundation, Lu has directed narrative and documentary projects and produced music videos for major artists and brands. She holds an MFA from UCLA and teaches directing and screenwriting at UCLA Extension.

About the BlackMaria Microcinema
The BlackMaria is a 40-seat brick-and-mortar space in San Francisco dedicated to cinema as study, discourse, and disruption. At its core is a cinema lens framework rooted in decolonization and abstract thinking, utilizing RDA (Rooted in Decolonization and Abstract Thinking).
