Event Details

KALW presents Raymundo Valdez’s Prismatic City, a solo art exhibition showing the city as it lives: layered, luminous, & constantly changing. Presented with support from Joyride Pizza, providing dinner at 6 PM

Valdez’s first solo exhibition, PRISMATIC CITY: LANDMARKS IN LIGHT, is on view in San Francisco at KALW’s Live Event Studio Art Gallery through April 10.

Artist Statement: This show is deeply personal to me. Prismatic City is my exploration of San Francisco; not as a postcard image, but as a place I live in, walk through, and experience every day. The landmarks in these paintings aren’t distant monuments. They’re part of my daily life.

Working in oil on canvas, I reinterpret these familiar structures through my signature diamond-like fractal style, breaking them into luminous planes of color and rhythm. These works are shaped by real moments: walking the streets, watching fog move across the skyline, and observing how light shifts from morning to dusk and into night.

At its heart, this exhibition is about connection. I hope these paintings bring recognition, warmth, and a reminder of what we love about San Francisco. If a piece sparks a memory or creates a quiet moment of happiness, then I’ve done what I set out to do.

Prismatic City reflects how the city is lived. Layered, luminous, and constantly changing.

Raymundo Valdez is a Mexican-American fine artist transforming cityscapes and deserts into vibrant oil paintings using his signature diamond-like fractal effect; an intricate style that reveals the hidden geometry, rhythm, and beauty of the everyday.

Ben Trefny, moderator of tonight’s artist talk, has been part of the KALW family since 2003, where he currently serves as Executive Producer. As Executive News Editor, News Director, and Interim Executive Director, he helped the news department win numerous regional and national awards for long- and short-form journalism. He also helped create numerous training programs — for teenagers, incarcerated people, and early-career journalists — and has taught hundreds of audio producers. His current work focuses on journalism, live events, and partnerships.
