“Howl at the Moon” Hike at Jack London State Historic Park (North Bay)

Wednesday, July 29, 2026 - 5:30 pm to 11:00 pm | Cost: $15
Jack London State Historic Park | 2400 London Ranch Rd, Glen Ellen, CA

Event Details

This rare midweek evening hike ventures to the summit of Jack London State Historic Park under the rising Buck Moon.

At the height of summer, July’s Buck Moon is named for the time when deer are growing new antlers in velvet, a sign of seasonal strength. At Jack London State Historic Park, it also echoes “The Call of the Wild,” where Buck is the central character—a resilient dog shaped by instinct and endurance. Together, these meanings connect the moon above with the surrounding landscape.

Hikers will set out in the late afternoon light and reach the summit as the sun sets to watch the Buck Moon rise. The return hike will be under moonlight—an entirely different way to experience the trail, where the park feels just a little wilder.

This is a strenuous hike of 8+ miles roundtrip. Participants should be prepared for a steady pace, limited stops on the ascent, and hiking in the dark on the return. A headlamp or flashlight is required for the return hike after dark, and hiking poles are strongly recommended.

Please bring plenty of water and a snack or bagged meal to enjoy at the summit. Dress in weather-appropriate layers and wear sturdy hiking shoes. Don’t have a headlamp or trekking poles?  Park staff will have a limited number available for checkout on a first-come, first-served basis.

Pet dogs (non-service animals) are not permitted on backcountry trails in order to protect wildlife. For more information about dogs at Jack London State Historic Park, visit https://jacklondonpark.com/policies/.
