Event Details

Join the California Historical Society (CHS) and SPUR for the Unbuilt San Francisco: The View from Futures Past exhibition opening celebration with music, performance, and art in Annie Alley, a side street turned temporary pedestrian plaza.

Free, but an RSVP is required and a $5 donation is encouraged.

This is a multi-venue event taking place at California Historical Society (678 Mission St.), SPUR Urban Center Gallery (654 Mission St.) and Annie Alley sandwiched in between.

Inside at California Historical Society: The show focuses buildings designed, but never built in three areas: the waterfront (Embarcadero and the Ferry Building), SOMA/Yerba Buena, and the Marin headlands and includes architectural models, shadowboxes, photographs and drawings.

Outside in Annie Alley:

  • Live Labyrinth street drawings by Paz de la Calzada
  • Historic film projections
  • DJ and dancing

There will be a cash bar ($5 beer/wine).

About Unbuilt San Francisco
CHS and SPUR join AIA San Francisco / Center for Architecture & Design; Environmental Design Archives, College of Environmental Design, UC Berkeley; and San Francisco History Center, San Francisco Public Library in Unbuilt San Francisco, a five-venue exhibition examining visions of the urban landscape in San Francisco and the Bay Area.

Each of the five institutions will display treasures from archival collections, architecture firms and private architectural collections, and host companion programming, panel discussions and lectures.

Unbuilt San Francisco: The View from Futures Past presents some of the most ambitious efforts to reimagine the city of San Francisco and the Bay Area as a metropolitan region.

The exhibition reaches beyond plans and models to depict the political, social, and economic challenges to sites—such as Alcatraz, the Ferry Building, Marincello in the Marin Headlands, and Chinese Gardens that were never built as part of the Yerba Buena Center master plan —that are embedded with unbuilt phantom histories. The selected artworks and architectural drawings propose that culture and collectivism have deeply impacted thinking about the built environment of the Bay Area.
