There’s a good chance that during some point in your life you’ve seen a Celebrate People’s History poster decorating the walls of your classroom, community center or neighborhood book shop.
They commemorated socially significant events such as the takeover of Alcatraz by Native Americans, the autoworker strike of 1936 in Flint, Michigan or anti-deportation rallies, all with bright, beautiful screen-printed works of art.
Initiated by Josh MacPhee in 1998, this far-reaching project uses poster art to document the hidden history of social justice movements.
THE EVENT: A complete set of these posters has just been published as a book. This FREE event includes a poster exhibit, local artists signing books and more…
INCLUDES A PANEL DISCUSSION WITH:
- Lincoln Cushing of DOC POPULI, a site that forms a digital archives of political poster art from Cuba, China, the United States.
- Favianna Rodriguez an artist taught in East Oakland by Chicano political poster artists at a very young age.
