For 30 years now, Pier 39 is overtaken by tens of thousands of tulips in February. Don’t miss the colorful display of Tulipmania.
The tulips will be on display through Sunday, February 27, 2011. Every day there are free tours at 10am in which docent tell you what’s what. These meet at the Entrance Plaza to Pier 39.
Tulipmania comes in full bloom to Pier 39 more than 39,000 tulips are planted throughout, coming in every color and variety combination conceivable including Apricot Beauties, Texas Flames, Purple Princes, Flaming Parrots, Swan Wings, Burgundy Lace and more.
The tulips are topped with winter vegetables including lettuce, parsley, celery and red chard. The tulip plantings can be spotted throughout PIER 39 and its waterfront parks.
Some History: The event began just one year after the Pier first opened in 1978. This beautiful floral display makes a nice “welcome home” gift to the resident sea lions who traditionally return back home to the PIER 39 Marina in mid-January.
