A massive sale of 500,000 books: The 50th Annual “Big Book” Sale

The Big Book Sale celebrates its 50th Anniversary by featuring 70 categories of books, DVDs, CDs, books on tape, vinyl, and other forms of media, all for $1-$3, at the Fort Mason Center’s Festival Pavilion.

More than half a million transactions at The Big Book Sale—combined with online auctions, two used book stores and annual events—will raise approximately one million dollars to benefit the public library’s free programs and neighborhood branch upkeep efforts. The Friends of the Library, as one of the nation’s largest used book distributors, is proving that ‘the book’ is not dead.

On Sunday, the final day of the sale, everything is $1

As shoppers browse the bins for rare books and autographed favorites, clues broadcast daily over Twitter and Facebook will guide people to win gift certificates to iconic San Francisco establishments like the Ballet, Opera, Symphony, de Young Museum, Nopa Restaurant, and many more.

The Big Book Sale is free and open to the public and all proceeds from the Big Book Sale benefit the San Francisco Public Library’s literacy programs for children, teens and adults.
