Borders, one of the two major bookstore chains in the US is on the verge of collapse, even as authors are being abandoned by publishers to go “indie” via Kindle and iPad.
The ebook (r)evolution is here, but its course is not yet charted—will the dinosaurs of New York’s publishing industry go extinct, and what new species of publication and publisher will emerge?
And this talk brings up something the speakers really care about: will writers be able to make a living? (not that most of them are doing that even now)
To hear about this and more join Sci-Fi authors Terry Bisson, Nick Mamatas, Tim Pratt and perhaps a few more people in prognosticating doom and poverty, or a cybercommons of plenty.
- Terry Bisson is a novelist, activist, and the Hugo and Nebula award-winning author of short stories, some of which will soon be collected in TVA Baby.
- Tim Pratt is the author of several fantasy novels in the Marla Mason series, which he has recently taken to self-publishing on Kindle, and most recently The Nex.
- Nick Mamatas is the author of three novels, including Sensation and edits Japanese science fiction and fantasy in translation.
