Event Details

Legion presents No Rules To Do, a solo exhibition of new works by Jessalyn Aaland. Aaland’s compositions are made of brightly colored forms cut from paper, vinyl, and metallic foils. Aaland is often noted for her exploration of collage. At Legion, Aaland shifts from her signature use of familiar imagery to a rigorous process of abstraction: first making drawings of quotidian objects, then digitizing selected forms into vector outlines, outputting these in various materials with the aid of a cutting plotter, and finally assembling the elements by hand. This method simultaneously simplifies collage, by neutralizing the dissimilarities of its individual components; and complicates it, by devising an elaborate, analog-digital-analog process.

No Rules To Do includes a series of single, isolated objects—beach ball, water bottle, pinwheel, and others, again made from cut-out shapes. The unexpected combination of materials and textures used to render these images distorts their face value and turns each into a puzzle to be examined and enjoyed up close.

This event will run from July 17 until August 28, 2015.

Jessalyn Aaland has exhibited her work at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts: ConVerge (San Francisco, CA), Swarm Gallery (Oakland, CA), San Francisco City Hall, Adobe Books Backroom Gallery (San Francisco), and Narwhal Projects (Toronto, Canada). Artist residencies include People’s Gallery (San Francisco, 2011) and Facebook headquarters (Menlo Park, 2013); Aaland is also featured in the Facebook Artist in Residence Program Second Season book. Aaland is based in West Oakland, CA.

Legion is a contemporary lifestyle boutique representing independent designers—many local and exclusive to the area—including Cold Picnic, Kowtow, First Rite, Feral Childe, Ilana Kohn, Kaarem, Ben Medansky, Micaela Greg, and Young in the Mountains. Founded by Bay Area native and fashion writer Sydney Pfaff, Legion also stocks a selection of home design, paper goods, and books. Jessalyn Aaland: No Rules To Do continues the series of art exhibitions for Legion’s dedicated upstairs gallery, curated by Alice Wu.
