Event Details

Book and Wheel Works inaugurates Moving Art House, a series of events featuring artists of southeast San Francisco. The kick-off event, Book Mo/Biblio Guagua takes place Saturday, July 25, 2015, at the Portola Branch Library Open House.

Happenings include poetry, visual art and music by artists from the Portola District and adjoining neighborhoods:

  • San Francisco Poet Laureate and Bayview resident Alejandro Murguia, will read his new poem “Living in the Portola.”
  • The renowned Hermanas Peña-Govea (Portola-Bernal) will play their signature mix of Latin music genres.
  • Personalize your own copy of Book Mo Book, a silkscreened book with artwork by Emory Douglas, Juan Fuentes and other artists of southeast San Francisco.
  • Story building with Edris Cooper-Anifowoshe,
  • Chinese poetry written in sand calligraphy
  • Chalk garden for coloring, button making,
  • Raffle with special prizes
  • Snacks are free to all

Moving Art House is a mobile cultural space created by Kate Connell and Oscar Melara (Book and Wheel Works) in collaboration with The Mexican Bus. The Mexican Bus is a vibrantly painted popular culture icon, filled with small sculpture, decals, Mexican movie posters of the 40s and 50s. The Moving Art House series includes three events and a culminating exhibition at the Portola Branch Library opening in December. Moving Art House is Book and Wheel Works’ third public art project in the Portola District.
