Event Details

Muriel Schmalberg Ullman presents Mosaic and Madrone Watercolors, incorporating 1976 Costal Brava and 1981 Mendocino County inspirations.

Mosaic Watercolors
“Our old deux chevaux bounced down the road on the Costa Brava. It’s September 1976 and raining. We stop at a neglected Roman ruin where a mosaic floor fragment startled me with its optical illusion, magnetic power, and intensity. It danced in front of my eyes as I did a line drawing of the pattern made with small natural stones by an artist/artisan in the 1st century AD. Several years later I unraveled these patterns using graph paper and finally understood the mathematical repeats, formula and rhythm. As I painted my watercolor mosaics, I felt a strong connection with each stone and the Roman artist/artisans of long ago.”

Madrone Watercolors
“My Madrone is on a mountaintop in Mendocino County. In 1981 I was beckoned by this old tree. I set up my easel nearby and did a watercolor, leaf by leaf, branch by branch. It felt as if my hand was guided. Each color choice was perfect. This was not my usual style or subject. It painted itself. The tree and I became friends. I painted the madrone many times after that experience, but the magic of the first painting never came back. I still visit “My Madrone” several times a year and note the good and bad years and berries and aging.”

Please join her for a reception on Saturday, October 17 from 1-3pm. Watercolors Mosaics & Madrones – Art Exhibit will run from October 6–November 14, 2015.
