Darkly, Funny Stories: Adrian Tomine’s “Killing and Dying” | SF

Killing and Dying is a collection of interconnected and darkly funny stories told in comic form. Tomine’s gift for capturing intimate moments and subtle emotion is on full display in his latest collection of graphic shorts. Dealing with issues of identity and hyperconnectivity, parenthood, mortality, and the daily struggles of contemporary life, Tomine’s characters—aging baseball fans, insecure comedians, horticulturists, out-of-touch parents among them—are artfully drawn, a cast of searchers and stumblers who you can’t help but recognize.

Adrian Tomine was born in 1974 in Sacramento, California. He began self-publishing his comic book series Optic Nerve. His comics have been anthologized in publications such as McSweeney’s, Best American Comics, and Best American Nonrequired Reading, and his graphic novel Shortcomings was a New York Times Notable Book of 2007. Since 1999, Tomine has been a regular contributor to The New Yorker. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife and daughters.
