Event Details

The Presidio Trust proudly inaugurates a new lecture series featuring nationally known historians.

Fundamental San Francisco: The Creation of the Port and the Development of the City: In this program historic images chart the physical development of the Port of San Francisco and its relationships to the city. This little-known story is fundamental to the history of San Francisco and to the city’s growth and prosperity from the 19th century to World War II. Through monumental works of engineering, the Port created the familiar piers and some of what is today the most desirable urban land in the United States.

About the Speaker: Michael Corbett, architecture historian

An independent architectural historian who has been writing about San Francisco since 1973. He is the author of Splendid Survivors: San Francisco’s Downtown Architectural Heritage (1979), the influential survey that formed the basis of the downtown plan and remains a standard reference on San Francisco architecture.
