de Young’s “Summer of Love” Opening Celebration
50 years ago, San Francisco rocked the world with art, fashion, and music during the Summer of Love. Celebrate 1967 with a day full of art-making, performances, DJs, social activism, and new artist work.
The Summer of Love Experience: Art, Fashion, and Rock & Roll will be an exhilarating exhibition of iconic rock posters, photographs, interactive music and light shows, costumes and textiles, ephemera, and avant-garde films.

FREE (Gallery admission is not included.)Please note that the free and open-to-the public activities listed below take place either in front of the museum or in the museum’s public spaces. Admission to the museums’ galleries and special exhibitions will not be free and requires a paid ticket.
This event commemorates an “only in San Francisco” social and aesthetic movement, and will remind museum visitors that in a time of international upheaval, the city played a vital role in changing society and amplifying the pulse of the nation.
Schedule:
- 12:00-1:00 pm: Pop-up gallery talks by artists represented in the exhibition
- 12:00-2:30 pm: DJ set by Jackie Sugarlumps
- 12:00-3:00 pm: Performances and Face Painting by Velocity Circus – Velocity Circus’s characters bring the Summer of Love back to Golden Gate Park playing music, wearing flowers in their hair, and sharing the love of the ’60s. Plus, festive artists will offer face painting.
- 12:00-4:00 pm: Screenprinting demonstration with the San Francisco Poster Syndicate
- 12:00-4:00 pm: Poster design and button-making with the museum’s Teaching Artists
- 12:00-2:00 pm and 3:00-5:00 pm: Film Screening: “Berkeley in the Sixties” – In 1964 the Berkeley campus of the University of California became the seedbed of the nascent antiwar movement when student demonstrations culminated in the mass arrest of hundreds of protesters. Combining newsreel footage with interviews with some of the main figures of the protests, documentary filmmaker Mark Kitchell sheds light on the first, galvanizing stirrings of the Free Speech Movement and its subsequent influence on late-1960s radicalism. - 12:00-5:00 pm: Community Activism with 10 organizations who are changing the world
- 1:00-5:00 pm: Screenprinting with April Artist-in-Residence Carrie Iverson
- 2:30-3:30 pm: Live music by San Francisco Airship – San Francisco Airship is a tribute to these legends and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees. The stellar musicians respectfully recreate the feeling and live performance sounds of The Airplane 1967-1970. Members have performed with Jefferson Starship, Blue Cheer, Quicksilver Messenger Service, The Tubes, Big Brother and The Holding Company, New Riders of Purple Sage, and more.
- 2:30-5:00 pm: DJ set by Neil Martinson with go-go dancer Micaela Scofield
