Only three days a year have free meters in SF including Xmas Day.

For most San Francisco, parking (and meters) will be free on Christmas Day 2019! Just make sure to remember that hazards and illegally parking in handicapped spaces are always prohibited and that after midnight when the clock strikes 12/26 that late-night street sweeping might begin.

Here’s the basics:

Christmas Day: Wednesday, December 25, 2019
– Parking Meters not enforced city-wide (City of SF or Port of SF) – But please note starting at 12:00am on 12/26 meters may be enforced – please note that Port of SF hasn’t updated their website for 2019, but they have typically not enforced meters on Christmas Day
– M-F Street Sweeping not enforced
– 7-Day Street Sweeping not enforced (Nighttime sweeping after midnight will be enforced)
– Commuter Tow Away not enforced
– Unmetered Green/Yellow/White Zones not enforced – we don’t have any specific information about “metered” green/yellow/white zones on xmas

>> Park at your own risk of getting a ticket: We’ve done our best to review all the rules and lay them out for you, but you’re on your own of course. If you want more clarification, contact SF parking enforcement.

Christmas Parking Rules Overview:
Wednesday, December 25, 2019
FREE PARKING
(i.e. Not Enforced)

  • M-F Street Sweeping: Not enforced
Please note that the few streets that have nighttime 7-day street sweeping – like Market Street – may still be enforced after midnight
  • M-F Residential Permit Parking: Not enforced
  • Commuter Towaway: Not enforced
  • *Parking Meters: On Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day, parking meters are not enforced either on city property or Port of SF Property. Please note that Port of SF hasn’t updated their website for 2019, but they have typically not enforced meters on Christmas Day

But please note….
– Hazards are always subject to tickets and towing
– Posted 1-2 hour parking time limit areas and Night-Time Seven-Day-a-Week Street Sweeping (such as Market Street) will be enforced after midnight.
– Meter customers are advised to check parking meters to verify enforcement time limits and amounts.

ENFORCED:

  • Red Zone: Enforced
  • Blue Zone: Enforced (Handicap)
  • Metered Green Zone: Enforced (short term parking – usually 10 mins Monday-Saturday 10 am to 6 pm). But… we called SFMTA and they told us Green Zone was NOT enforced on Christmas Day, but we have not been able to confirm this 100%.
  • Metered Yellow Curbs : Commercial loading & unloading parking zones are enforced, but there’s no tow-away. (you can still get a ticket) But… we called SFMTA and they told us Yellow Zone parking was NOT enforced on Christmas Day, but we have not been able to confirm this 100%.
  • Metered White Zone: Passenger loading zones are enforced (5 minute limit), but only while the business (and some apartment buildings) is open. If the business that paid for the zone (usually the one right in front of the white zone) is closed, it’s free parking. (Beware… some businesses are 24 hours even though they may look closed. Our parking enforcement source recommended you find a security guard for the building and ask.)
  • Nighttime Street Sweeping: On Thanksgiving Eve, Christmas Eve, and New Year’s Eve Enforcement does not issue citations for Nighttime Street cleaning.  However the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year begins at midnight.  So, DPW’s street sweeping crews are out and Enforcement issues citations for street sweeping violations.
