San Francisco’s Balboa Theatre celebrates its 88th birthday

The Outer Richmond’s Balboa Theatre celebrates its 88th Birthday with a silent movie, plus live ragtime and honky tonk music on Sunday, February 23, 2014.

$10 admission includes special drinks and birthday cake, plus a full entertainment lineup and a mini classic car show in front of the theater (as long as it doesn’t rain).

The feature film for 2014 will be a 35mm screening of Frank Capra’s 1926 silent film “The Strong Man” with live accompaniment by pianist Frederick Hodges.

The film will be introduced by film historian Joseph McBride, author of Frank Capra: The Catastrophe of Success. The evening will also feature live musical performances by acoustic honky-tonk cover band Coffee Zombie Collective and ragtime raconteurs The Parlor Tricks as well as prizes, food, beer and wine.

Gary Meyer, director of the Telluride Film Festival and former Balboa Theatre owner, will be playing host for the evening.
