After a massive (and controversial) $41 million restoration, San Francisco’s iconic Castro Theatre is finally making its grand return in 2026, and the first lineup is stacked.

The century-old landmark will reopen in February with a 20-night, sold-out Sam Smith residency, followed by concerts, comedy, film screenings and community events that bring new life to the heart of the Castro.

The newly announced shows include Lucy Dacus, The Breeders, Father John Misty, Perfume Genius, Santigold and “Queer Eye” star Jonathan Van Ness, among others. The Frameline Film Festival will also return in June for its 50th anniversary.

Under the new design, the restored 1,400-seat theater can now switch between seated and standing events, giving it flexibility for concerts, drag shows and film screenings while keeping its historic charm.

Tickets for all newly announced 2026 shows go on sale Friday, November 7, 2025 at 10 am.

Built in 1922, the Castro Theatre has long been the heart of San Francisco’s LGBTQ+ neighborhood. When the doors reopen, Another Planet Entertainment expects the venue to draw more than 200,000 visitors a year, a welcome boost for nearby restaurants, bars and small businesses that have felt the absence of the neighborhood’s cultural anchor.

The restoration included a reinstalled chandelier, restored ceiling artwork and a new motorized seating system that allows the auditorium to shift between screenings and concerts. The renovation was led by Another Planet Entertainment, which also operates the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium and Berkeley’s Greek Theatre.

The Castro Theatre will also host drag performances, comedy nights and community events, along with a new grant program to support LGBTQ+ performers once the venue reopens.
