Hat tip to the SF Chronicle for the scoop

San Francisco is getting a brand-new movie theater just in time for the summer blockbuster season. Apple Cinemas, a small East Coast theater chain, has signed a lease to take over the long-vacant 14-screen cinema inside the historic Don Lee Building at 1000 Van Ness Ave.

The massive 92,000+ square foot space was previously operated by CGV Cinemas, which closed in early 2023. Now, Apple Cinemas plans to bring the theater back to life within 30 days, complete with IMAX, ScreenX, and what will reportedly be San Francisco’s first-ever LED cinema screen.

This will be Apple Cinemas’ first West Coast location. They’re also planning to open a second Bay Area outpost at the former Century Blackhawk Plaza theater in Danville later this year.

Bonus: The Van Ness building is also filling up fast—new tenants include the Emerald Lounge coffee shop (in the old box office), a massive fitness center opening soon, and spots like Ike’s and City Smoke House already on site. Movie nights on Van Ness are officially back.
