Could This Pop-Up Help Solve SF’s Homeless Problem?

A new pilot project for a new year to help SF’s homeless

It’s a New Year, so it’s time to start thinking about new ways to make San Francisco a better city.

Broke Ass Stuart tipped us off to a volunteering event on January 2, 2016 that might be a step in the right direction.

At the “Saint Francis Homeless Challenge” you’ll help construct a 12.5 foot diameter dome shelter (a “DecaDome”) at SOMArts at Brannan and 8th Street to serve as a proof of concept to providing pop-up off-grid services for the homeless.

Saint Francis Homelessness Challenge | Volunteer
Saturday, January 2, 2016 | 10am to Noon
SOMArts, 934 Brannan at 8th St.
FREE

From 10am to Noon volunteers will build the structure, and then you’ll get to see benefits right away. For the rest of the day the homeless will receive free meals, free socks, have access to phone charging, a monitored porta potty, acupuncture and more.

The goal is to create a healing hub and sleep sanctuary showcase and show the city that we can make an impact on underutilized public land quickly and affordably and with minimal bureaucracy.

So if you’ve ever wanted to be a part of changing San Francisco for the better and helping out the homeless, take two hours out of your Saturday and you’ll see an immediate impact later that day.
