Sadly, SF Gate has shared the news that one of San Francisco’s favorite late-night diners, and queer meeting spaces, is set to be demolished.

Sparky’s 24 Hours Pizza & Diner, the 24-hour diner on Church Street, closed its doors abruptly in 2016 and has sat vacant since.

Plans have just been approved for the building at 240-250 Church Street, constructed in 1917, to be demolished and be redeveloped into 7-story, 24-unit mixed-use apartment building.

Sparky’s neighbor Thorough Bread & Pastry will remain in the building, however, but the rest is slated to become housing with only 3 affordable housing units. There is discussion of a queer meeting space that may be allocated to the building. The project sponsors are set to meet with Castro LGBTQ Cultural District to discuss plans, a condition set by the San Francisco Planning Commission.
