Thanks to SF Examiner for sharing the news that a stretch of San Francisco’s Hayes Street will remain closed to cars for another year.

SFMTA voted unanimously on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, to keep the 400 block of Hayes Street (between Octavia and Gough streets) car-free on Fridays and Saturdays.

On Fridays, pedestrians can enjoy a car-free Hayes Street from 4 to 10 pm, and again on Saturdays from 1 to 10 pm. The new hours reinstate cars on the stretch of Hayes Street on Sundays and Saturday mornings. Previously, the portion of Hayes Street was closed to cars from 10 am to 10 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Hayes Street initially went car-free in August 2020 in the midst of the pandemic to allow residents safe walkways with ample social distancing space and keep neighborhoods active for merchants. Hayes Street car-free closure will remain in effect until October 19, 2024.
